Wine and Cake Pairing Guide: 7 Pairings Perfect for Your Wedding Day

Planning your wedding in the midst of quarantine? A wine and cake tasting is the perfect date night activity you can do at home.

While virtual wedding planning tasks such as online venue tours, guest lists, registries, and invites are obvious items to tackle as you social distance, this wedding planning activity is a creative way to keep the excitement of your wedding celebration going.

After all, can you think of a better way to spend a quiet Saturday evening in than trying wine and cake flavors with your partner? We didn’t think so!

The most important rule of this dessert pairing activity is to match your cake and wine sweetness as close as you can. If the wine isn’t as sweet as the cake it is paired with, it will fall flat and taste bitter.

Look for “late harvest” on your wine labels, as this is a sign that riper fruits were used, which tend to have sweeter wine results.

Below, you’ll find information on flavors, a visual guide and a link to a printable cake and wine pairing scorecard.

1. Vanilla Cake and Riesling

Pair a classic vanilla cake with a Riesling. We recommend an off-dry Riesling so the wine sweetness doesn’t overpower vanilla flavor.

Cocktail or Mocktail: Lavender Lemonade

2. Chocolate Cake and Amarone

Pair rich chocolate flavor with a full-bodied red wine such as Amarone. A Ripasso is a more budget-friendly wine option with similar flavoring.

Cocktail or Mocktail: Roy Rogers

3. Funfetti Cake and Sparkling Rosé

If you love bright pops of color and sweet flavors, try pairing a Funfetti cake with a rosé. Your guests are sure to love the strawberry bubbles paired with the vanilla Funfetti.

Cocktail or Mocktail: Virgin Watermelon Margarita

4. Lemon Raspberry Cake and Prosecco

A refreshing lemon and raspberry cake is perfect for a spring or summer wedding. Pair it with a light, bubbly, and citrusy Prosecco.

Cocktail or Mocktail: Mango Mule

5. Red Velvet Cake and Cabernet Sauvignon

You’ll find luscious cocoa flavors in both a rich red velvet cake and a decadent Cabernet Sauvignon. The cream cheese icing will accentuate the Cab’s vanilla note.

Cocktail or Mocktail: Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Martini

6. Chocolate Hazelnut Cake and Tawny Port

A sweet chocolate hazelnut cake will pair great with a Tawny Port. This dessert wine from Portugal has primary caramel and hazelnut notes, with secondary complementary flavors such as berry and mocha.

Cocktail or Mocktail: The Nutella Martini

7. Coffee and Cream Cake and Madeira

If you love coffee, taste test a coffee and cream cake and pair it with a Madeira. This sweet wine is also from Portugal, and it showcases almond, caramel, and coffee notes.

Cocktail or mocktail: Salted Caramel White Russian

Our printable tasting scorecard lets you keep track of your favorite cake and wine pairings as you taste test. If you want to keep your inlaws in the loop, have them join in the fun with a virtual tasting.

If you have already selected a bakery for your cake or have one in mind, have them send over cupcake samples for no-contact delivery or pickup. The same goes for wine: if you already have an alcohol vendor, have them send you full bottles or sample sizes. If not, you can purchase wine and cupcakes from your local supermarket.

Samantha + David | Blues Farm Wedding

Congrats Sam + David| Old Florida Wedding

Champagne and navy colours with pops of vibrant orange adorned this old Florida wedding of Samantha and David at a beautiful blueberry farm in Florida.

When asked what type of atmosphere Samantha and David envisioned their wedding to be, they chose sophisticated, classic and relaxed and they definitely achieved that. Every detail was beautiful and perfect. It was such a pleasure to photograph.

Samantha and David’s wedding even included a beautiful sign hand painted by Samantha’s mother, and the cake was made by her sister. I just love little details that mean something included in a wedding. It’s so special!

Samantha and David’s love story starts as 19- and 20-year-old University of Florida students on a trip to Paris with a student organization. What a magical time it was, culminating in David asking Sam on a date while walking over the Seine River after exploring Paris together that day. How picture perfect!
They dated for a few years in college, then broke up, and  later reconnected 3.5 years later. It was meant to be!

The Proposal From David’s Perspective:
We had been planning a November trip to Asheville, and it seemed like a perfect getaway, so I began to scheme of ways to ask Sam that would be special. She loves Charleston, so I booked a place downtown without telling her (she thought we were staying in Greenville with family). Then, in the planning process,
because Sam is a pretty savvy gal, I was concerned that she’d realize we were deviating to Charleston and think something was up. So, I decided that Charleston could be the celebratory opportunity and still a surprise, whereas the proposal could occur on the way up the east coast headed to “Greenville.” Sam
is a big fan of stretching her legs on longer road trips, so it was an easy sell to have us stop off at Jekyll Island. I had researched Driftwood Beach and felt it would be a great spot for us to become engaged. We stopped there, walked around for a bit until I could find a private moment, which was challenging due to
the two field trips on the beach. As soon as I did, I got down on one knee, and asked her to marry me! I think we were both thrilled and shocked a bit. And honestly, we had the best time in Charleston. We got dressed up and strolled over to a great dinner at Magnolia’s, then went on a beautiful morning jog around downtown Charleston. It was truly magical and restful!

Sam about David: David knows a ridiculous amount of sports knowledge and is in effect, great at trivia! He also has converted Sam into an Orioles baseball fan through his passion.

David about Sam: Two come to mind real quick. Sam is a really good driver. She also does not have a great singing voice, EXCEPT when she sings in a mezzo-soprano opera style voice. I’m curious to see how that develops over time. Also, she is a ridiculously good and creative cook.

They both love food, the outdoors, long walks, traveling, bike riding, yoga, movies, live music, theater and slow evenings together or with friends.

David, What Do You Love About Sam?
Sam is beautiful, kind, compassionate, empathetic, gracious, wise, patient, loyal, strong, smart & fun, among other things. We’ve been through so much together. She’s loved me so well.

Sam, What Do You Love About David?
It’s hard to pick, but I love his passion, courage, strength and kindness. I love how he really listens, validates my feelings and thoughts, and helps me dream. I also love his
crazy sense of humor and how we loves our little kitty cat, Toothless (and no, he’s not toothless).

Jordanne + Connor | Historic Oxwich Bay Hotel, Wales, United Kingdom Wedding

Jordanne + Connor | Historic Oxwich Bay Wales

If you’re looking for some great inspiration about true love, then look no further than Jordanne and Connor’s beautiful Welsh wedding! Set in the beautiful countryside of Wales, United Kingdom, Oxwich Bay Hotel is one of the most exclusive wedding venues so of course, I was over the moon to be the photographer for this wedding.
The landscape includes the ocean, a castle and typical Welsh countryside. The ceremony was held at Oxwich Bay Hotel and the reception was held in the Marquee. It was truly a beautiful setting!
Jordanne and Connor met at a restaurant after a night out on the town. Connor loves redheads, when in walks this beautiful red-headed girl and life has not been the same since. When Connor met Jordanne’s parents, it was for a halloween party and he was dressed up as a zombie football (soccer) player and it was a great icebreaker!
Jordanne shares some special details on how she met Connor  “We met on a night out in Swansea. It was the end of the night and I found a seat to rest my feet in a takeaway shop called chik-o-land. Connor had come in with his friends and them knowing he likes redheads pointed me out to him and we got chatting” THEN of course, they have a great proposal story. Connor proposed to Jordanne whilst at the beach, and now their wedding is on the beach! How fitting is that?

Jo tells us a little about their love story “I was at work and connor had text me to meet him down the beach afterwards to find ‘driftwood’. I thought it was strange and it was raining but thought I’d go along with it. Went down on the beach and connor has me looking for this wood. I had my back to him and he tried to send me a photo of the ‘wood’ but it was being slow and I was becoming suspicious. He then said nevermind look at my phone. On it was a photo of earlier where he had written in the sand ‘will you marry me?’ he then got on his knee and took out the ring and I said YES!!

Jordanne tells us that she loves that Connor is her biggest fan, so empowering, supportive and believes in her always and in response, Connor shares that in his opinion, Jordanne is the most caring, kindest, funniest person you will meet. He says that “You need this person in your life and I get to call her my best friend”.

They wouldn’t change a thing about each other. Plus, they both support Tottenham Hotspurs (COYS!) which is the best team in the world if I may chime in!

What was fun for me to photograph a British wedding again is that I totally forgot about signing the registry, which is something American Weddings don’t usually feature.

What touched me the most about this wedding was the table dedicated to the bride’s grandfather who had passed away, and it was such a touching, heartfelt reminder of his love.

The bride also had a pink butterfly sewn into her dress, close to her heart, to remind her of her grandfather. Cue the tears! Check out her amazing wedding dress designer below.

The venue was gorgeous, and the two flower girls (one was my daughter!) were absolutely amazing! The day went off without a hitch. Who can forget the amazing hair artist Dilly? who has the personality bigger than the world who just added to the wedding day fun!

It had been raining all week, and we were so nervous about the big day, when we awoke to glorious blue skies and fresh, breezy winds. Perfect for a wedding!

This wedding holds a special place in my heart. It was a beautiful day, full of joy and happiness!

Congratulations to the amazing couple!
